For many Florida drivers, the best lifted truck is not necessarily the tallest one. It is the truck that gives you the right balance of ride height, tire size, suspension quality, road comfort, towing ability, and daily drivability. If you plan to use your truck near the coast, it is also worth thinking about salt air, regular washes, underbody care, brake condition, and tire wear.

Florida does not follow the same annual passenger-vehicle inspection model that some other states use, but that does not mean buyers should ignore safety checks. FLHSMV still encourages drivers to keep vehicles road-ready through regular maintenance, especially tires, brakes, lighting, steering, and other core safety items.

That matters even more with lifted trucks. Before buying, check the suspension components, wheel and tire fitment, steering feel, brake condition, lighting, mirrors, and overall drivability. A properly lifted truck should feel stable, track correctly, stop confidently, and avoid rubbing or clearance issues during normal driving.

If you are buying from out of state and registering the truck in Florida, you should also make sure the title, VIN, insurance, and registration paperwork are ready before your local tax collector visit.

Florida has specific rules that matter for lifted trucks. The state sets a maximum overall vehicle height of 13 feet 6 inches, including the load carried on the vehicle.

Florida also sets bumper-height limits for vehicles with a net shipping weight of 5,000 pounds or less. For trucks, the listed maximum bumper heights are:

▪ Less than 2,000 pounds: 24 inches front, 26 inches rear
▪ 2,000 to 3,000 pounds: 27 inches front, 29 inches rear
▪ 3,000 to 5,000 pounds: 28 inches front, 30 inches rear

These measurements are taken from the ground to the bottom of the bumper. A violation of Florida’s bumper-height rule is treated as a moving violation.

If you are registering a vehicle in Florida for the first time and you do not have a Florida plate to transfer, FLHSMV lists a $225 initial registration fee. Initial registration must be completed in person at a local service center when titling the vehicle, with proof of identity, proof of Florida insurance, and a completed title application.

Florida registration renewals can usually be completed for one or two years, and vehicle registrations generally expire at midnight on the first owner’s birthday unless the vehicle is registered to a business.

Florida sales and use tax applies to new and used motor vehicles sold, delivered into, imported into, or used in Florida unless a specific exemption applies. The Florida Department of Revenue also notes that county discretionary surtax may apply based on the purchaser’s registration or title address.
