Buying a Lifted Truck in South Dakota: What You Need to Know
South Dakota is one of the best states in the country for lifted truck owners. With open highways, rural backroads, snow-covered winters, and access to hunting, farming, ranching, and off-road recreation, a lifted truck is a natural fit for South Dakota drivers.
At Ultimate Rides, we carry lifted trucks that are ready for South Dakota conditions, whether you need a truck for work, towing, winter driving, or weekends in the Black Hills.
South Dakota has very few restrictions on suspension lifts and oversized tires, which makes it easier to own and register a lifted truck compared to many other states.
Lifted Trucks Built for South Dakota Roads
From Sioux Falls and Rapid City to rural roads across the state, South Dakota drivers need trucks that can handle snow, gravel, mud, and rough terrain. A lifted truck gives you better ground clearance, improved visibility, and more capability in all seasons.
Vehicle Inspection in South Dakota
South Dakota does not require statewide emissions testing or annual vehicle safety inspections for most passenger vehicles and pickup trucks. That makes registering a lifted truck much simpler than in many other states.
However, your truck still needs to be roadworthy. Tires, brakes, steering, lights, and other equipment must remain in safe working condition. South Dakota requires brakes on all four wheels and requires a parking brake as well.
Lifted Truck Regulations in South Dakota
South Dakota is one of the least restrictive states for lifted trucks. There are currently no specific state limits on suspension lift height, frame height, or bumper height for most pickup trucks. Drivers are generally free to install lift kits, larger wheels and tires, aftermarket bumpers, grille guards, and suspension upgrades.
There are still a few rules to keep in mind:
▪ Maximum overall vehicle height is 14 feet.
▪ Tail lights must be between 15 and 72 inches from the ground.
▪ Auxiliary driving lights may be mounted between 12 and 42 inches from the ground.
▪ Tires must be in safe condition and have at least 1/16 inch of tread depth.
▪ Exhaust systems must use a muffler, and bypass systems are not allowed.
Because South Dakota laws are very flexible, it is usually possible to register even heavily modified lifted trucks without issue.
Registration & Taxes in South Dakota
To register your lifted truck in South Dakota, you will generally need:
▪ Vehicle title or signed purchase paperwork
▪ Proof of South Dakota insurance
▪ Valid driver’s license or South Dakota ID
▪ Payment for registration fees and taxes
South Dakota charges a 4% motor vehicle excise tax on most vehicles purchased from out of state. Registration fees are generally based on the age and weight of the truck.
Because Ultimate Rides ships trucks nationwide, we can help guide you through the paperwork and make sure you have everything needed to register your lifted truck in South Dakota.
