Buying a Lifted Truck in Mississippi: What You Need to Know

Mississippi is truck country — deep down to the culture. From the Delta’s flooded levee roads and hunting land stretching across the Yazoo Basin to the pine forests of De Soto National Forest and the red clay backroads threading through the Hill Country, trucks here aren’t a lifestyle accessory — they’re a working tool. Deer season puts lifted trucks on dirt roads from Tishomingo County to the Gulf Coast. Spring rains turn agricultural tracks in Bolivar and Sunflower counties into something that demands real ground clearance. And from Hattiesburg south toward Biloxi and Ocean Springs, the coastal plain offers its own mix of sandy trails, boat launch access, and roads that don’t always behave after a Gulf storm rolls through.

The regulatory environment in Mississippi is buyer-friendly: no annual vehicle inspections, no emissions testing, and a straightforward lift law that still leaves plenty of room to build a serious truck. At Ultimate Rides, we build trucks ready for that kind of use — and we deliver them to your door anywhere in the state.

Lifted Trucks Built for Mississippi Roads and Terrain

Mississippi’s terrain doesn’t get the attention it deserves among off-road enthusiasts, but the state rewards drivers who show up prepared. The real Mississippi driving experience is mud — deep, sticky, red clay mud in the Hill Country; black Delta mud that grabs a tire and holds it; sandy-bottomed creek crossings in the Piney Woods. The De Soto National Forest in the south offers forested trails, creek crossings, and access roads through a half-million acres of longleaf pine country. The Delta National Forest near Vicksburg puts you in the middle of bottomland hardwood terrain cut through with sloughs, waterways, and backroads that flood and dry on their own schedule.

For mud bog enthusiasts, Mississippi has a real culture around dedicated parks — Barnyard Mud Boggers near Fulton covers 700-plus acres of riding terrain, Red Creek Off-Road in Perkinston runs creek crossings and wooded trails, and Clear Creek ORV Trails near Sardis offer forested loops with creek crossings at multiple difficulty levels. This is a state where a serious mud-terrain tire setup isn’t showing off — it’s practical.

Vehicle Inspections in Mississippi

Mississippi is one of the simplest states in the country when it comes to vehicle inspections – and that’s not an accident. The state repealed its mandatory biennial safety inspection program in 2015, and since then, no annual or periodic inspection has been required for personal vehicles of any kind.
Here’s what that means for Mississippi truck owners:

▪ No annual safety inspection required. Mississippi eliminated its statewide vehicle safety inspection program effective July 1, 2015. There is no inspection sticker, no annual station visit, and no required checklist to pass for registration renewal.
▪ No emissions testing required. Mississippi has never implemented a vehicle emissions inspection program. No emissions test is required at registration, at renewal, or at any other point — for gasoline, diesel, or any other fuel type. This applies statewide across all 82 counties with no geographic exceptions.
▪ Window tint inspection only exception. The one situation where an inspection applies: if your vehicle has aftermarket window tinting, a tint inspection through the Mississippi Department of Public Safety may be required to verify the tint meets legal light transmission standards. This is a tint-specific check only – it does not involve any mechanical, safety, or emissions review.
▪ Out-of-state registration. When registering a vehicle purchased out of state (like from Ultimate Rides), you’ll complete the title transfer through your local county Tax Collector’s office. No vehicle inspection is required as part of that process — just the title, payment, and applicable taxes.

We include complete documentation with every truck we ship – title, build specs, and all modification records — to make your Tax Collector visit smooth and quick.

Lifted Truck Regulations in Mississippi

Mississippi has specific lift laws on the books — and one notable recent addition targeting squatted trucks — but overall the state remains accessible for serious lifted truck builds. Here’s exactly what applies:

Total Lift Limit: 8 Inches (Including Tires)

Mississippi limits total vehicle lift — measured including the effect of larger tires — to 8 inches. Of that, the suspension component alone is capped at 6 inches. This means: if you’re running a 6″ suspension lift, your tire upgrade should not add more than 2″ of additional height above stock. A 6″ suspension lift with a modest tire upgrade is a capable, legal build for Mississippi terrain.

Bumper Height

Bumpers must be at least 4.5 inches tall and, for vehicles in the relevant weight class (under 4,501 lbs GVWR), front bumpers may not exceed 24 inches from the ground and rear bumpers may not exceed 26 inches. Bumpers must extend at least 10 inches outside the frame rail and be attached in at least four places. These are safety-focused standards designed to maintain bumper-to-bumper alignment between vehicles on the road.

Squatted Truck Ban (HB 349)

Mississippi passed and signed House Bill 349, banning so-called “squatted” vehicles — trucks where the front fender height exceeds the rear fender height by 4 or more inches. This law was specifically aimed at the Carolina Squat style modification, which raises the front of the vehicle significantly while leaving the rear low. The effect is headlights angled skyward and altered brake geometry. Properly lifted trucks — where the vehicle is raised evenly or with only minor rake — are entirely unaffected by this law. Our builds are never squatted.

Vehicle Height and Lighting

▪ Overall maximum vehicle height: 13 feet 6 inches
▪ Reflectors cannot exceed 60 inches from the ground
▪ Headlights and taillights must remain functional and properly aimed after any lift

Fenders and Mud Coverage

While Mississippi does not have an explicit statewide fender coverage law in the same form as some other states, standard safety expectations around tire debris apply. Fender flares are standard equipment on most properly installed lift builds and are included or accommodated by every kit we use.

Bottom line: A 6″ suspension lift with a moderate tire upgrade is a fully legal, capable build for Mississippi. Stay within the 8″ total limit, avoid the squatted configuration, keep bumpers within spec, and you’re in good shape across all 82 counties.

Registration & Taxes in Mississippi

Mississippi’s registration cost structure can surprise buyers who haven’t dealt with it before — the state uses a county-based ad valorem tax that is the dominant cost in vehicle registration and varies significantly depending on where you live.

Ad Valorem Tax — The Big Number

Mississippi assesses annual ad valorem (property) tax on vehicles based on the vehicle’s retail value and your county’s millage rate. The formula:

Vehicle Retail Value × 30% × (County Millage Rate ÷ 1,000) = Annual Ad Valorem Tax

For vehicles under 10 years old, the Department of Revenue determines retail value based on MSRP with depreciation applied. Millage rates across Mississippi’s 82 counties ranged from approximately 46 mills (Winston County) to over 171 mills (Quitman County) for 2024–2025. In a mid-rate county like Hinds (120 mills), a truck with a $45,000 MSRP would carry an assessed value of $13,500 and an annual ad valorem tax of approximately $1,620 before the legislative tag credit.

A Legislative Tag Credit reduces the taxable amount by 5% of the assessed value — a modest offset but one built into every calculation.

As the truck ages and its assessed value drops, the ad valorem tax decreases each year. Veterans with a Purple Heart or a 70%+ disability rating are fully exempt from ad valorem taxes.

Sales Tax

Mississippi charges a 5% state sales tax on the purchase price of most passenger vehicles and trucks under 10,000 lbs GVWR. Trucks over 10,000 lbs pay a reduced 3% rate.
Important for out-of-state purchases: Unlike most states, Mississippi does not credit sales tax paid to another state when you register a vehicle here. If you purchase a truck from Ultimate Rides and pay Illinois sales tax on the transaction, you will still owe Mississippi’s full 5% use tax upon registration. Factor this into your total cost calculation.
Base Registration and Title Fees

▪ Registration fee (pickup trucks): $7.20 annually
▪ Passenger vehicle registration: $14.00 annually
▪ Title fee: approximately $15.00

Registration is handled through your county Tax Collector’s office — Mississippi does not use a centralized DMV. New residents have 30 days from establishing residency to register their vehicles; failing to meet this deadline can result in a $250 fine.
